What is Underground Cable Pipeline Detector?

The Underground Cable Pipeline Detector (also known as a Cable Locator, Pipe Tracer, or Utility Locator) is a high-tech electronic instrument designed to accurately locate, trace, and determine the depth of buried underground utilities. It is an essential tool for preventing damage to underground infrastructure during excavation and for efficient maintenance of power, telecommunications, water, and gas networks.

Utilizing advanced electromagnetic induction technology, the system typically consists of a Transmitter (which applies a specific frequency signal to the target line) and a Receiver (which detects the electromagnetic field radiating from the line). This non-destructive testing method allows operators to pinpoint the exact position, direction, and burial depth of metallic pipes and cables without digging.

Our detector is engineered for reliability in complex underground environments, offering multiple operating modes to distinguish target lines from adjacent utilities, ensuring safety and efficiency for construction crews, utility companies, and maintenance engineers.

What are the specific application scenarios?

**Pre-construction Safety Detection:** Before any groundbreaking work, use a detector to scan the work area and map the distribution of underground pipelines. This is a crucial step in preventing accidents such as "severing fiber optic cables" or "damaging high-voltage cables," ensuring the safety of construction workers and urban infrastructure.

**Cable Route Tracing:** When underground cables lack ground markings or the markings are lost, a transmitter sends a signal to the cable, and a receiver tracks the signal along the ground to accurately map the cable's direction and burial path.

**Burial Depth Measurement:** Accurately measuring the burial depth of pipelines is crucial when pipeline repairs or cross-operations are required. This instrument provides direct-reading depth measurement to help engineers develop reasonable excavation plans.

**Insulation Fault Location:** For damaged points in the anti-corrosion coating of power cables or pipelines, specific fault location modes (such as the A-frame method or step-by-step voltage method) can accurately locate grounding faults or anti-corrosion coating damage points, guiding emergency repair work.

Q1: What is the difference between Active and Passive locating modes?
A: Active Locating involves using a Transmitter to apply a specific frequency signal onto a target line (via direct connection, clamp, or induction). This provides accurate location, depth, and identification of the specific utility. Passive Locating uses the Receiver alone to detect signals already present on utilities, such as 50/60Hz power signals or radio signals (RF) radiating from cables. Passive locating is useful for initial surveys but cannot identify specific cables or measure depth accurately. Active locating is recommended for precise excavation work.

Q2: How deep can the Underground Cable Pipeline Detector detect?
A: The detection depth depends on several factors: soil conditions (conductivity), pipe material, diameter, and the frequency used. Typically, our standard detector can trace lines up to 3-6 meters deep. For deeper large-diameter pipes, lower frequencies (e.g., 512Hz) and high-power transmitters can achieve depths of 10 meters or more. However, depth accuracy decreases as depth increases.

Q3: Can this detector find non-metallic pipes (like PVC or concrete pipes)?
A: Standard electromagnetic locators cannot directly detect non-metallic pipes. However, you can trace non-metallic pipes using two methods:

Tracer Wire: If a metallic tracer wire was buried alongside the pipe during installation, you can locate the wire.

Sonde (Transmitter Probe): A small battery-powered transmitter (Sonde) can be pushed through the pipe (e.g., via a duct rod or sewer camera). The Receiver locates the Sonde's signal from above ground, allowing you to trace the path of plastic or concrete pipes.
