What is Insulation Oil Dielectric Strength Tester?

product-750-750

The Insulation Oil Dielectric Strength Tester (also known as Oil BDV Tester or Oil Breakdown Voltage Tester) is a specialized laboratory instrument designed to measure the dielectric strength (breakdown voltage) of insulating liquids, primarily transformer oil, but also suitable for capacitor oil, cable oil, and switchgear oil.

Insulating oil serves the dual purpose of electrical insulation and heat dissipation in power transformers and high-voltage switchgear. Over time, oil degrades due to moisture ingress, oxidation, and contamination by particles. The dielectric strength test is the most direct method to assess the oil's ability to withstand electrical stress. A low breakdown voltage indicates contamination or moisture, signaling the need for oil purification or replacement.

Our tester complies with international standards such as IEC 60156, ASTM D877/D1816, and GB/T 507. It automates the testing process, applying a controlled AC voltage ramp to a standardized electrode gap immersed in the oil sample, and accurately records the voltage at which breakdown occurs.

Where can this be used?

1. Preventive Testing for Power Transformers
In-service Oil Monitoring: Periodically drawing oil samples from operating transformers for testing to monitor the degree of oil degradation. A decline in dielectric strength typically indicates moisture ingress or contamination by decomposition products from insulating fibers.
New Oil Acceptance: Testing newly purchased transformer oil to ensure that its factory specifications comply with national standards (e.g., the Breakdown Voltage [BDV] of new oil should typically be ≥ 40 kV or higher).
Post-treatment Acceptance: Re-testing oil that has undergone processing via an oil filtration unit (dehydration, degassing, and impurity removal) to verify the effectiveness of the treatment.
2. High-Voltage Switchgear (Circuit Breakers) Oil Testing
Switching Oil Analysis: Testing of insulating oil used in minimum-oil circuit breakers or load switches. During switching operations (opening and closing), the oil in these devices generates electric arcs, leading to rapid oil degradation (producing carbon black, acids, etc.); consequently, its dielectric strength requires more frequent monitoring.
3. Power Capacitors and Cables
Capacitor Oil: Measuring the dielectric strength of the impregnating oil contained within power capacitors.
Oil-Impregnated Cables: Monitoring the insulating oil in aging oil-impregnated power cables.
4. Laboratory and Research Applications
Oil Product R&D: Quality control for manufacturers of insulating oils.
Aging Studies: Simulating the aging process of oil under various electric field strengths and temperatures to investigate the patterns of change in its dielectric properties.

FAQ

Q1: What parameter does a BDV oil tester measure?
A: It measures the breakdown voltage (BDV) of insulating oil under specified electrode configurations and test conditions, serving to assess its dielectric strength and level of contamination.

Q2: Why do repeated tests on the same oil sample sometimes yield different results?
A: Common causes include the presence of air bubbles, uneven distribution of impurities, electrode contamination, inconsistent electrode spacing, variations in the voltage ramp rate settings, or failure to allow the sample to settle in accordance with standard procedures.

Q3: How long must an oil sample be allowed to settle before testing?
A: This depends on the specific test method and on-site conditions. Generally, it is recommended to follow standard procedures for settling or degassing the sample to prevent air bubbles from causing premature dielectric breakdown.
