What is the primary function of a handheld contact resistance tester?

product-900-900

The Handheld Contact Resistance Tester is a ruggedized, micro-ohm measurement instrument purpose-built for verifying the contact resistance of circuit breakers, disconnect switches, bus-bar joints, and cable terminations across medium- and high-voltage networks.

Unlike bench-top models that demand cumbersome setups, this tester weighs under 1.8 kg (3.97 lb) and delivers a stabilized DC test current of 100 A / 200 A - fully compliant with IEC 62271-100, IEEE C57.09, and DL/T 845.4 requirements that mandate a minimum 100 A DC for reliable contact-resistance measurement

How the Handheld Contact Resistance Tester Is Used?

Application Scenario Typical Test Object Why It Matters
Substation commissioning HV/MV circuit breakers (SF₆, vacuum) Validates manufacturer's specified contact resistance before energization
Scheduled maintenance Disconnect switches, GIS contacts Detects micro-degradation trends; utilities typically test on a 3–6 year cycle per IEEE Std 3007.1
Cable & bus-bar joint verification Bolted/compression connectors A joint resistance exceeding 1.5× the resistance of an equal-length conductor signals potential thermal failure (NETA MTS §7.9)
Railway traction systems Pantograph contacts, rail bonds Ensures bonding resistance stays below 50 µΩ to prevent signal interference
Manufacturing quality control Relay contacts, contactor assemblies 100 % end-of-line testing at production speed
On-site troubleshooting Any suspected high-resistance joint Pinpoints resistive hot-spots without requiring thermal imaging confirmation

What Sets This Tester Apart?

1. True 100 A / 200 A DC Output in a Handheld Form Factor

Internal high-efficiency Li-polymer battery pack (14.8 V / 12 Ah) provides ≥ 300 consecutive tests on a single charge at 100 A.

Proprietary pulse-current topology reduces heat generation by 35 % compared to continuous-output designs, extending battery cycle life to ≥ 800 charge cycles (IEC 61960 standard test).

2. Anti-Interference Design for Real Substation Environments

Dual-guard terminal Kelvin (4-wire) method eliminates lead resistance error.

Built-in digital filtering algorithm suppresses 50/60 Hz stray current up to 10 A peak, a common issue when testing grounded equipment on live busbars.

IP54-rated housing withstands dust, rain splash, and operating temperatures from –20 °C to +50 °C.

3. One-Button Auto-Test with Built-in Safety Logic

Automatic discharge detection - the instrument will not start if residual voltage > 10 V is sensed across the test object.

Auto-reverse polarity check to warn of incorrect lead connection.

Thermal management: if internal temperature exceeds 70 °C, output ramps down gracefully rather than abruptly cutting off, protecting the DUT and the operator.

FAQ

Q1: What is the difference between contact resistance testing and insulation resistance testing?
A: They measure opposite properties. Contact resistance testing applies a high DC current (typically ≥ 100 A) across a closed conductive joint and measures the resulting micro-ohm-level voltage drop to determine how well the joint conducts. Insulation resistance testing applies a high DC voltage (250 V – 5 kV) across an open insulating barrier and measures the mega-ohm-level leakage resistance to determine how well it isolates. The two tests use completely different instruments and are not interchangeable.

Q2: Can this handheld tester replace a bench-top / trolley-type contact resistance tester?
A: For the vast majority of field applications - yes. Our handheld unit delivers the same 100 A / 200 A test current mandated by international standards but in a 1.8 kg package. The only scenario where a larger unit may be preferred is when test currents > 200 A are required, which is uncommon outside specialized laboratory settings or ultra-high-voltage (UHV) GIS testing.

Q3: How do I know when the Kelvin clips need replacement?
A: Replace the clips if you observe any of the following: (a) jaw spring pressure drops noticeably, causing clips to slip on conductors; (b) contact tip plating (gold over nickel) is visibly worn through to base metal; (c) successive readings on the same test object show scatter > ±1 % without any other change. Replacement clips are available as a spare part (Part No. XXXX-KC01) and can be included in wholesale orders at preferential pricing.
