What is Transformer Turn Ratio Test?

product-750-750

The Transformer Turn Ratio Test (TTR) is a dedicated instrument for checking the turns ratio, ratio error, phase displacement, and excitation current of power transformers and instrument transformers. It works by applying a test voltage to the primary winding and precisely measuring the resulting secondary voltage, from which it calculates the turns ratio.

This measured ratio is then compared against the nameplate value and design specifications. Discrepancies can point to specific internal problems-turn-to-turn short circuits within a winding, incorrect internal connections, or deteriorating contact resistance at tap changer positions. Rather than relying on guesswork, technicians obtain hard numbers that support decisions during commissioning acceptance, routine condition assessment, and troubleshooting investigations.

What is Product features?

3 Phase TTR Transformer Turns Ratio Meter

1. It can precisely measure the capacity of various distribution transformers. It is an inductive measurement method, which is convenient and accurate.
2. It can measure the no-load current, no-load loss, short-circuit voltage and short-circuit loss of various types of transformers.
3. It can automatically perform waveform distortion correction, temperature correction, voltage correction, current correction (short-circuit test under non-rated current conditions), and the operator only needs to input the correction index and the instrument can automatically calculate the corrected results. This is very suitable for units without the conditions for conducting short-circuit tests on transformers of slightly larger capacity.
4. The large screen and high-brightness liquid crystal display, full Chinese menu and operation prompts achieve friendly human-computer interaction. The touch keys make the operation simpler. The wide-temperature liquid crystal display with brightness adjustment can adapt to all seasons, winter and summer.

In what scenarios is this device used?

Factory Testing: Verification of transformer ratio and connection group before delivery.
Handover Acceptance: Verification of transformer ratio and tap position after installation and before commissioning.
Preventive Testing: Periodic retesting of transformer ratio to detect early signals of inter-turn short circuits.
Post-Overhaul Re-inspection: Verification after winding treatment and tap changer replacement.
Troubleshooting: Verification of transformer ratio and polarity in cases of abnormal metering errors and protection malfunctions.
Third-Party Testing: Issuance of a traceable transformer ratio test report.

How do I perform maintenance and upkeep?

Test Lead and Fixture Maintenance: Regularly check insulation condition, connector oxidation, and fixture spring tension; replace damaged leads promptly to prevent measurement errors due to poor contact.

Channel Self-Check: Regularly verify the accuracy of each measurement channel using a standard ratio transformer (if applicable).

Software and Data Management: Regularly back up historical test data; maintain consistent versions of the host computer software; archive report templates.

Battery Maintenance (if applicable): Manage charging and discharging according to instructions; check battery status before long-term storage.

Calibration Recommendations: For acceptance testing or third-party testing, it is recommended to calibrate annually or according to internal control cycles; retain certificate numbers for traceability.

Storage Conditions: Store in a dry, well-ventilated environment, avoiding condensation and corrosive gases; transport in a shockproof box.

What is after-sales service?

Remote Technical Support: Rapid response to wiring questions, wiring group identification and settings, error interpretation, data export, and report generation issues.

Spare Parts Supply: Long-term supply of test leads, clamps, power adapters, etc.

Calibration and Repair: Support for factory calibration and repair to meet metrological traceability requirements.

Retraining Service: Provides retraining on operating procedures and wiring group knowledge during personnel changes.

FAQ

Q1: Why is the three-phase turns ratio unbalanced?

A: Possible causes include inter-turn short circuits in a phase winding, poor contact in a phase tap changer, or incorrect wiring; each phase needs to be checked individually.

Q2: How important is the wiring group identification function?

A: For newly installed or overhauled transformers, incorrect wiring group identification can lead to parallel operation failure or protection malfunction; it must be tested and verified.

Q3: What is the difference between CT turns ratio testing and transformer turns ratio testing?

A: CT turns ratios are usually larger (e.g., 600/5); during testing, attention must be paid to secondary side safety (open circuit prohibited) and differences in wiring methods.
