What is Transformer short-circuit impedance?

1

The Transformer Short-Circuit Impedance Tester is a specialized instrument designed to measure the short-circuit impedance (Uk%) and load loss (Pk) of power transformers. It is an essential tool for assessing the transformer's ability to withstand short-circuit forces and for verifying its design parameters.

Unlike DC resistance testers that measure the resistive component only, this tester applies an AC voltage (typically at power frequency) to the primary winding with the secondary short-circuited. It accurately measures the voltage, current, and phase angle to calculate the impedance voltage (Uk%) and load loss (Pk). These parameters are critical for determining voltage regulation, short-circuit current magnitude, and the thermal and mechanical stability of the transformer under fault conditions.

The tester employs advanced phase-separation technology to accurately measure the resistive and reactive components of the impedance, even in the presence of strong magnetic interference or harmonic distortion. It is widely used in factory acceptance tests (FAT), field maintenance, and post-fault diagnostics

Where is it applied?

1. Factory and Commissioning Acceptance Testing
Parameter Verification: Following the transformer's departure from the factory or its installation on-site, the short-circuit impedance (Uk%) and load loss (Pk) are measured to verify compliance with design specifications and standards (e.g., IEC 60076).
Quality Control: This ensures that the transformer's impedance value falls within the permissible tolerance range (typically ±10%), a factor that directly influences the magnitude of the transformer's short-circuit current and its voltage regulation performance.
2. Diagnostic Assessment Following a Short-Circuit Fault
Mechanical Integrity Inspection: When a transformer is subjected to the shock of a short circuit, immense electrodynamic forces can cause winding deformation or displacement. By measuring the short-circuit impedance-specifically, by observing whether the impedance value undergoes a significant change (typically exceeding 2%–3%)-it is possible to identify potential mechanical deformation within the windings.
Fault Characterization: By integrating these results with DC resistance testing and SFRA (Sweep Frequency Response Analysis), a comprehensive assessment can be made regarding the nature of any internal faults within the transformer.
3. Verification of Conditions for Parallel Operation
Impedance Matching: Prior to operating two or more transformers in parallel, their respective short-circuit impedances must be measured. Parallel operation is permissible only when the impedance values are closely matched (typically requiring a difference of less than 10%) to ensure proper load sharing and prevent excessive circulating currents.
4. Power System Modeling and Calculation
Data Acquisition: This process provides accurate, fundamental impedance parameters that serve as the basis for calculating short-circuit currents within the power system and for determining relay protection settings.

What precautions should be taken before use?

Safety Warnings
High-Voltage Output Risk: Although the test voltage is typically not high (ranging from tens to hundreds of volts), the output current is substantial, and the transformer under test constitutes an inductive load. It is strictly prohibited to touch the test leads or the terminals under test during the testing process.
Inductive Load Discharge: Upon completion of the test, magnetic energy remains stored within the transformer windings. It is strictly prohibited to disconnect the leads immediately. You must wait for the instrument to complete its automatic discharge cycle (indicated by the extinguishing of the indicator light or an on-screen prompt); only after confirming that no residual voltage remains may you disconnect the test leads. Failure to do so could generate a high-voltage back-EMF, thereby endangering personal safety.
Reliable Grounding: The instrument's chassis must be reliably grounded. Additionally, the windings on the non-measurement side of the transformer under test should be reliably short-circuited and grounded.

FAQ

1. What is transformer short-circuit impedance (%Z / Uk) used for?
It is a fundamental design parameter that defines the voltage drop at rated current due to internal impedance. It determines the transformer's fault current level, voltage regulation under load, and load sharing in parallel operation. Measuring %Z validates the transformer's nameplate data and detects internal changes.

2. How is short-circuit impedance different from DC winding resistance?
DC resistance measures only the resistive (copper) loss of the winding. Short-circuit impedance is the vector sum of resistance and leakage reactance (dominated by reactance). %Z is sensitive to winding geometry, core and coil spacing, whereas DC resistance is not.

3. When should a short-circuit impedance test be performed?

Factory: As part of routine and type tests (IEC 60076 / IEEE C57.12).

Commissioning: To establish a baseline before energizing.

After transport: To detect shipping damage.

After a fault (short-circuit, lightning, through-fault): To verify mechanical integrity.

During periodic maintenance: For long-term trending.
