What is Ultrasonic Partial Discharge Tester?
An Ultrasonic Partial Discharge Tester is a non-contact detection instrument that uses acoustic sensors (typically operating in the 20kHz–300kHz ultrasonic frequency band) to collect, analyze, and locate acoustic signals generated by partial discharge activity inside power equipment.
Partial discharge generates characteristic ultrasonic signals. By detecting and analyzing the intensity, frequency characteristics, and propagation time difference of these acoustic signals, rapid screening and location of internal discharge activity can be performed without power interruption, disassembly, or contact with high voltage. It is particularly suitable as the first screening tool for substation operation and maintenance.

What is Function characteristics?
- Portable design, small, light, easy to carry, one person can operate.
- Hand-held non-contact, visual, audible and display waveform, charged non-contact detection.
- It can scan the open (outdoor) equipment of the transformer station on line to find and locate various partial discharges: corona, arc, flashover, creepage, disconnection, arcing, etc
- Find and locate insulator discharge on the tower, climbing of open cable head, and local discharge detection and positioning of underground cables.
- Leakage detection of a high-pressure sealed gas liquid.
- In the handover and preventive test of the power system, in the local discharge test of the main transformer and GIS, the device can be used with the local discharge. Therefore, if there is local discharge, it can distinguish between internal or external discharge, if external discharge, specific discharge points can be located.
- In the factory test of large oil immersed transformer, dry-type transformer, GIS and other manufacturers, the device is used with the partial discharge instrument in the partial discharge test. If there is discharge, it can not be seen whether it is internal discharge or external discharge on the screen of the partial discharge instrument. Use the handheld patrol locator to scan the test object. The external discharge point can be quickly found and located. If there is no external discharge, it is judged as internal discharge.
- The 5-megapixel HD camera can easily focus to detect fault points and take photos of the rod and tower identification and faulty equipment.
- The embedded GPS receiver automatically stores coordinate data and provides GPS navigation function to facilitate query and save detection paths.
- With the function of detecting temperature and humidity, it can detect real-time environmental temperature and humidity.
- Have data saving function, can realize data playback function.
- The display is a color touch screen for easy detection and use.
- Moderate intensity of the green laser light aiming, the human eye is easy to track in the sun.
- High sensitivity, direction and directivity, can be accurate positioning of line faults.
- Strong focus capability and can be tested on a vehicle with a driving speed of 30 km/h.
- Ultrasonic detection can be applied for a noise environment, free of ambient sound.
- The detection adopts non-contact method, and the effective detection distance can reach 50 meters, which is safe and reliable.
- Data management and evaluation are convenient using background software.
What are the precautions for using it?
Maintain Safe Operating Distance
Although ultrasonic testing itself does not require contact with high voltage, safe operating distance regulations must be followed within substations. Unauthorized contact with equipment casings (live parts) is strictly prohibited.
Consistency of Measurement Point Location and Contact Method
The sensor position, contact force, and contact area at the same measurement point should be as consistent as possible for each test; otherwise, the comparability of different measurement results will be poor.
Environmental Noise Assessment Must Be Conducted First
Background noise (in a state without discharge or with known normal equipment) should be collected in the test area first to determine the background level before setting an appropriate threshold.
Distinguish Between Mechanical Noise and Discharge Signals
Mechanical equipment such as fans, oil pumps, and radiators in substations generate ultrasonic signals, which must be distinguished by combining spectral characteristics and signal patterns.
Clean Contact Sensor Contact Surfaces
Use an appropriate amount of coupling agent (such as silicone grease) between the sensor and the equipment casing to ensure good acoustic coupling. Do not force contact on rough or corroded surfaces.
Pay Attention to Scanning Speed for Non-Contact Scanning
Scanning too quickly may miss partial discharge points; it is recommended to reduce the scanning speed in suspected areas to ensure sufficient signal acquisition time.
Record complete test information, including measurement point number, location description, equipment operating status, ambient temperature and humidity, test time, and sensor type, ensuring data traceability.
Do not draw conclusions solely from abnormally high values. Ultrasonic signals are affected by various factors; a comprehensive assessment should be made based on trends, multi-location measurements, and other testing methods before proposing any action.

FAQ
Q1: What is the difference between an Ultrasonic Partial Discharge Tester and a TEV detector?
A: Ultrasonic testing is based on acoustic signals, offering stronger location accuracy and resistance to electromagnetic interference; TEV testing is based on electromagnetic signals, suitable for rapid screening of metal-enclosed enclosures. The two are complementary.
Q2: Does ultrasonic partial discharge testing require a power outage?
A: No, it can be performed entirely while the equipment is running, without affecting normal power supply.
Q3: Can ultrasonic testing locate the discharge position?
A: Yes, using the Time-of-Origin Multiple-Sensor (TDOA) method can assist in locating the direction and position of the discharge source (depending on configuration and site conditions).
