What is oil breakdown meter?

The Oil Breakdown Meter is a portable insulating oil breakdown voltage testing instrument designed for on-site maintenance and rapid screening. Compared to fully automated laboratory equipment, this instrument is designed with small size, light weight, simple operation, and rapid results in mind, making it suitable for immediate quality screening and rapid qualification determination of insulating oil in substations, warehouses, construction sites, and other locations.
It helps maintenance personnel obtain oil breakdown voltage data immediately when laboratory conditions are unavailable, providing on-site basis for decisions such as whether to allow oil filling for operation, whether to initiate oil treatment, and whether to perform emergency oil replacement.

How to Properly Collect and Process Oil Samples?
Key Points for Correct Sampling
Sampling Container: Use a dedicated brown glass bottle. Thoroughly clean and dry before use. Plastic containers are strictly prohibited.
Sampling Location: Take samples from the bottom drain valve or dedicated sampling valve of the equipment. Avoid sampling from the top (as surface impurities may be introduced).
Sampling Volume: Approximately 500 mL of oil sample is required for each BDV test (6 tests). It is recommended to collect 1 L for retesting.
Avoid Air Bubbles: Insert the sampling tube below the oil surface to prevent air from entering. Seal the bottle after filling and store it vertically.
Transportation and Storage: Avoid vigorous shaking and direct sunlight. Complete the test within 24 hours.

Oil Sample Injection Specifications
After cleaning, the oil cup must be rinsed 2-3 times with the oil sample itself. Inject the oil slowly along the cup wall to avoid air bubbles. Allow the sample to stand for the specified time as required by the standard before starting the test.
FAQ
Q1: How much does electrode erosion affect BDV results?
A: Eroded electrodes have rough surfaces, which can cause uneven electric field effects, leading to a systematically lower BDV. Significant erosion necessitates cleaning or replacement.
Q2: How to verify the accuracy of electrode spacing?
A: Use a dedicated spacing gauge (usually included with the instrument) for periodic verification. Spacing deviations exceeding ±0.05mm will result in significant measurement errors.
Q3: How often should the transformer operating oil BDV be tested?
A: According to relevant GB/T, DL/T, or IEC regulations, different voltage levels of transformers have different recommended testing cycles (usually 1-3 years, more frequently for critical equipment).
