The surge arrester testing functions as a specialized live-line diagnostic tool for evaluating insulation condition and aging progression in Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV)-based surge arresters while they remain fully energized. Over extended service periods, these protective devices endure repeated overvoltage transients, environmental moisture ingress, surface contamination buildup, and cumulative thermal cycling. These stressors gradually degrade the internal nonlinear resistive elements, a process that manifests most tellingly through an upward drift in resistive current component.

Field crews deploy this instrument to capture several diagnostic quantities: total leakage current, the resistive current fraction, third harmonic content, and active power dissipation. Tracking these indicators over time allows maintenance teams to build a clear picture of arrester health and spot deterioration patterns before they progress to failure.
